Some Words About Our Work

Kim Singletary is brilliant. I could not have finalized my book manuscript without her help, and the support of Humanities First. After completing my dissertation, it was a daunting undertaking to conceptualize how to turn my dissertation into a publishable book manuscript.  Kim worked with me through the whole process. She offered keen insights to each chapter and section, vastly improving the quality of my writing and organization of the manuscript. Kim provided recommendations and areas to improve my argument, and how to revise and refine my overall draft. I am grateful for Kim’s invaluable editing assistance on this project.

Academic journal editing and peer review practices are unpredictable and often dispiriting, even when the outcome is positive. For my last journal article, I received a very tight revision deadline and faced the daunting task of trimming a fifth of the manuscript’s length with minimal guidance. I reached out to Humanities First in hopes of finding a supportive editor, who could give me targeted and comprehensive feedback. Dr. Kim Singletary was professional, comprehensive in her developmental and prose review, and tactful with every single suggestion she made. She took care to celebrate the strengths of the manuscript and made pointed suggestions that helped me reduce the word count while enhancing the impact of my ideas. I appreciate Humanities First’s ethical pricing policy and will strive to budget for this kind of editorial stage for future article manuscripts.

Writing a book was a daunting task, but Humanities First helped make it way less intimidating. The thoughtful feedback and careful attention to my drafts helped propel my project forward, smooth some of its very rough edges, and were generally invaluable in helping me finish my project on an aggressive timetable. I was delighted to get to work with them on my manuscript, and I’d strongly recommend them to anyone looking for help with their project.

Working with Kyle on my book proposal was a wonderful experience. This was my first book proposal and it was extremely helpful to get concrete suggestions on revising the structure to make the best of this specific genre of writing. I really appreciated Kyle’s thoughtful edits on sentence- and word-level as well. There were several moments when I was reading through the suggested edits and thought: yes, this is exactly what I meant, but had had trouble finding the best words to express it so that it would make sense to readers not familiar with my work. Now I wish that I could work on all of my projects with Kyle, as the quality improves substantially!

The best part of Kim’s editing service is to discern an author’s writing style and tendencies and help him or her address them. As an international scholar of East Asian history, I have worked with Kim for several years to complete my book manuscript. I often pay much attention to the validity of historical interpretations while failing to fully articulate a larger historical context that situated the significance of my points. By using the form of questions, she enables me to realize what I miss and what was historically at stake. This process is more painful than correcting recurrent errors in grammar and syntax, but essential and rewarding for me to develop my writing skills. I am more than happy to keep working with Kim!
