SOAS, University of London, invites applications to the second round of Alphawood Scholarships.
The Alphawood Scholarships are part of SOAS’s new Southeast Asian Art Academic Programme, which has been funded by Alphawood Foundation, Chicago. The aim of the academic program is to advance the understanding and preservation of Buddhist and Hindu art in Southeast Asia through study and research, and to build and support a network of organizations and individuals in the Southeast Asian region who share and support this vision.
The scholarships are open to students who are normally resident in Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar/Burma, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The scholarships are open to students wishing to study a range of courses from Postgraduate Diploma to Doctorate level, with English language tuition and pre-course training also available. Upon completion of degree programs, students are expected to return to the region to contribute to the development of understanding and preservation of art and architecture in heritage organizations, museums and galleries, universities, research institutions and government departments.
Successful candidates who require extra English language or academic preparation before they start their course will be provided additional pre-sessional support. Requirements will be assessed on an individual basis after the scholarships have been awarded and will be based on the candidates existing English language abilities.
The Alphawood Scholarship covers tuition fees in full, and a generous maintenance allowance towards the costs of living and studying in central London, as well as flights to and from the UK at the start and end of the course. Visa costs will also be covered. The maintenance allowance will be provided in line with the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) guidelines for London (Doctoral) and will be calculated pro-rata for programs of less than a year. The maintenance allowance is expected to cover the cost of accommodation.
The closing date for 2015 applications is December 18, 2014 at 1pm (UK time).
