The University of California Press’s e-scholarship division will publish the inaugural issue of the journal Race and Yoga. Race and Yoga is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary academic journal committed to critical examinations of the history and practice of yoga in the West. The journal will feature research-based articles, editorials, and reviews of books, films, and art exhibits. The journal will be published annually beginning in 2015.
Race and Yoga‘s editorial board is currently seeking submissions for the first issue of the journal. The theme of the issue will be “Questions of Inclusion.” It will feature work that examines the (mis)perceptions, representations, and differential access to yoga in various communities. The editors are seeking original, unpublished manuscripts (no simultaneous submissions or previously published works).
Potential paper topics include:
- History of yoga in the U.S. (i.e. who has access and why?)
- Yoga in communities of color
- Cultural appropriation and yoga (e.g. of cultural symbols)
- Queer yoga
- Body Diversity and yoga
- Whiteness and yoga
Papers addressing other topics relevant to the general theme of inclusion will be considered.
Race and Yoga journal requests well-researched, clearly written work. Research articles up to 10,000 words from all relevant disciplines. Review essays should be limited to 4,000 words.
The deadline to submit is January 15, 2015.
