Postdoctoral Fellowship in Global Media and Film Studies, Department of Modern Culture and Media, Brown University

The Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University seeks candidates for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Global Media and Film Studies. The department emphasizes the theoretically informed analysis of film, television, video, new media, photography, sound technologies, and print in the context of modern and contemporary cultures. This scholars research should critically engage the technological and theoretical transformations of cinema and/or the media flows that are rapidly resituating all forms of media and social practices: from large scale co-productions to gaming, from consumer culture and imagined communities to geopolitics and war. We are interested in scholars challenging older conceptions of national culture, region, canon, and/or tradition. Possible research interests also include: the production and reception of one or more non-Western or Global South media and/or film practices, which could encompass texts, audiences and/or industries; the comparative/historical analysis of the relations between media and/or film formations and other cultural practices; and/or the history and theory of film in relation to new media in a global context. The Fellowship will begin July 2015.

The Fellow will offer one course each semester of the two-year appointment and will participate in an ongoing seminar, which he or she will help organize, at the Cogut Center for the Humanities. Applicants should have received their doctorate, from an institution other than Brown University, within the past five years. Applicants from outside North America are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a dissertation abstract or book abstract, two sample syllabi, and three letters of recommendation.  Review of applications will begin January 30, 2015. Applicants are strongly advised to submit materials by that date in order to receive full consideration. To apply, post materials to: http://apply.interfolio.com/27849
