The Sultan Visiting Scholar Program at UC Berkeley

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at UC Berkeley has announced the Sultan Visiting Scholar Program for Arab Studies, made possible through a generous endowment from the Sultan bin AbdulAziz Al-Saud Charity Foundation. The Sultan Program supports teaching, research, and public outreach on topics related to the Arab-Islamic world, with the overarching goal of promoting a deeper understanding of this important region at UC Berkeley and beyond.

The Sultan Visiting Scholar engages in research related to Arab Studies, and will deliver a public lecture as part of the CMES Interdisciplinary Lecture Series. S/he is hosted by the CMES.

The fellowship is available for one semester and provides a stipend of $18,000.

Applications are accepted from scholars who have received a Ph.D. within the last three years (or will receive it prior to holding the fellowship) and have not yet held a tenure-track position. UC Berkeley Ph.D. holders are not eligible. There is a local residency requirement for this program.

The application deadline is Friday, February 6, 2015. Awards will be announced in mid-spring semester 2015. Grant recipients are required to provide a short report and financial accounting within three months following the conclusion of the grant term. Further dissemination of materials produced under the auspices of this program may also be carried out by the CMES.
